Emerson Tool Company challenged us to create a cordless wet dry vacuum that appeals to new consumers by utilizing inherent and additional features to further convenience of use. By using focus groups and other research tactics, our team designed with the end user in mind.

Our research led us to two crucial takeaways:

-Because the market is largely unaware of the utility of cordless vacuums,
added incentives must be added to attract interest.
-Accessory storage is an aspect of the vacuum that can be easily improved.

Users that are have never used cordless wet dry vacuums have to be convinced of their value. The chart shows the focus group’s willingness to pay for certain features

Sketches of overall form and details enable a refined concept to be realized. Through rounds of sketch iteration, a design direction was found.

Full scale models were made to address functionality and overall proportion. Making complementary 3D models and meeting with Emerson executives helped our team achieve a design that could be fully realized in production.

Live tests were conducted to test the ergonomics of the top handle.

By shaping foam and 3D printing various part of our design, the team constructed a full-scale physical model of the proposed vacuum design and a matching 3D CAD model.
